June 2024 Immigration Update

Right now we are facing an immigration crisis of unprecedented proportions. With millions of cases pending in immigration courts and over 1 million asylum cases awaiting decisions with USCIS, the situation has called for urgent action. In response, President Biden has enacted an executive order allowing the temporary sealing of the US-Mexico border during times of surge.

Here's what you need to know about this significant policy change and its potential impacts.

There are 2.4 million cases pending in the immigration courts alone, and over 1 million asylum cases pending with USCIS. In an effort to curb those numbers, President Biden has stepped in and signed an executive order allowing the temporary sealing of the US-Mexico border when crossings surge.

  • This empowers border officials to prevent migrants from claiming asylum and quickly turn them away.
  • This restriction does not apply to minors crossing alone, or those who use the CBP One app.
  • The implementation and potential legal challenges of these measures remain uncertain.
  • This policy aims to create lawful pathways for migration, reducing the need for dangerous journeys.

These new measures have raised significant concerns about their legality and impact on due process, especially for those fleeing persecution. Many legal experts and advocates argue that such bans could deny many of the protections some migrants need and deserve.
